Australia's work integration social enterprise (WISE) sector presents a powerful opportunity for policy makers, philanthropists and practitioners who want to create supportive work environments that assist people experiencing barriers to work to handle uncertainty and change. For all of us, much depends on the supports that we can lean on as they navigate challenge and change. Funding for this kind of support, the quality of which generates superior employment outcomes that we know our sector can achieve, is currently very limited. Payment by Outcome (or PBO) mechanisms are powerful way for governments to work with the social enterprise sector to solve complex social problems like reduced incarceration, unemployment, or homelessness. White Box Enterprises is leading an exciting body of work that will see the WISE sector co-create a set of PBO design principles to strengthen the voice of the WISE sector across government, and raise the profile of PBO mechanisms across Australia as an effective means of directing funding to the most impactful models.
