The World Summit Awards has been initiated in 2003 in the framework of the UN World Summit on the Information Society (UN WSIS) held in Geneva. The declared aim of the conference was to make Information and Communication Technology (ICT) accessible to everyone and to bridge the digital divide.

WSA Australia aims at identifying and recognising digital innovations that have originated in Australia. This multi-aim award encourages positive Social Impact and nominates the eight best Australian Digital Innovations to the World Summit Award Global Contest:
