2021 Innovative Therapies For Mental Illness Grant Opportunity

Date/Deadline: 21 Jul, 2021

Many Australians will experience mental illness, with estimated lifetime prevalence being up to 45%. The most common forms of mental illness include depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders. Available standard treatments for mental illness can have variable efficacy and recovery rates, and recent novel drug discoveries have been few. There is, however, an emerging body of evidence on the use of hallucinogens or stimulant drugs supported by psychological/psychiatric care for treatment resistant mental illness.

Consistent with the Medical Research Future Fund Act 2015, the objective of the grant opportunity is to provide grants of financial assistance for Australian medical research projects that use clinical trials to assess the safety and efficacy of innovative therapies using hallucinogens and stimulant drugs supported by psychological/ psychiatric care for treatment resistant mental illness, compared to standard therapies.

This grant opportunity is being administered by NHMRC on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health.

Total Amount Available (AUD): $15,000,000.00
