Santiago | CHILE

Named as one of the top cities to be a social entrepreneur and one of the best countries to start a business in Latin America, Santiago is one of the cities at the helm of social entrepreneurship. This capital city, dubbed the “Chilecon Valley’ (need we say more?) is nestled at the foot of the Andes mountains and has plenty to offer for the avid traveller and social entrepreneur keen to learn. Have a look at ‘Start Up Chile’, a seed accelerator that’s worked with entrepreneurs from all around the world and embeds a social impact lens for Chilean locals.

Kathmandu | NEPAL

For those who want to summit mountains, Nepal is the place to start. Once you’ve casually finished Everest, why not head to Kathmandu to learn more about its local social enterprise scene? Head to a Seeing Hands Massage Parlour, which employs the visually impaired. Seven Women empowers women who run local and national tours of the country and has done for years – perfect for the traveller who is mindful of their tourist impact. There’s multiple local craft stores employing villagers helping them to reach a liveable wage.

Canggu | BALI

Yes, you read it right. Bali. Canggu, Seminyak’s quieter and cooler neighbouring city, is listed as one of the best places to work remotely in the world. It’s cheap, there is reliable access to internet, it’s surrounded by lush nature, a health conscious cafes and plenty of outdoor exercise options. And there’s a range of entrepreneurs already there. For the social entrepreneur who can’t take a real working break for a while, why not organise your life to jet to Bali for a week or so and have the best of both worlds? There are a bunch of seminars happening every day for for-profit and not-for-profit enterprises at the Dojo, so you’ll never be far away from expert advice. 

Delhi | INDIA

Eat, Pray, Love – India. Yes, we’ve heard of the dreamy Indian getaway before but what about diving deeper into Delhi’s social enterprise scene? From shopping at MESH, a store selling artworks from over 700 Indians with leprosy, to going for a skate at Soulcial Skating – a park that allows you to pay for the ticket of young people on the fringes of society who are building their skills, the city has much to offer. To date, India is one of the world’s biggest receivers of Impact Investing, impacting between 60 to 80 million lives – it’s obvious why this one is a must do!

Berlin | GERMANY

Berlin is awesome, enough said. While in recent history, Berlin has been recognised for its creativity and progressive population, today it’s reinventing itself again as thousands of refugees move to the city. These refugees have brought a new wave of migrant entrepreneurship and the eco-system is adapting to help them thrive. Initiatives like Migration Hub have risen as the go-to space for migrant entrepreneurship, supporting local refugee, asylum seeker and migrant businesses with getting things off the ground, connecting to other German services and to create social impact. As a social entrepreneur, Berlin offers a new perspective on a city adapting quickly to cultural entrepreneurship needs.
